Among parent company Darden's $6.9 billion revenue, Olive Garden accounts for $3.8 billion of that amount. Olive Garden was originally a General Mills unit. It opened its doors on December 13, 1982, in Orlando. Olive Garden had 145 restaurants by 1989, making it the fastest-growing unit in General Mills' restaurant division. Restaurants in the chain did well, and its sales per store soon surpassed that of Red Lobster, its former sister company. As a result, it eventually became the nation's largest chain of full-service Italian restaurants.
