It was founded in Chicago in 1966 and has since expanded to over 75 locations around the Midwest, including northeast Illinois, northwest Indiana, Florida, Arizona, and Wisconsin. The company's headquarters were in Frankfort, Illinois, which also housed a fiberglass cow previously used for advertising milk at the company's initial Chicago site. All of Gas City's assets were auctioned off in April 2011, following the company's bankruptcy filing in October 2010. It shuttered its last locations on May 12, 2011, marking the end of its operations.
