I purchased a Mastercard Gift Card as a Christmas gift for my daughter from Target on 12/21/24. It was the last card, a bit rumpled, but sealed and no numbers shown through the packaging. A few days after Christmas, my daughter said she could not activate the card because numbers were scratched off on the front and back of the card. I went to Target to obtain a refund and was told they only cover Target gift cards and their policy was for me to contact Mastercard. I contacted them using the number on the back of the card. I was then transferred to a department to report the issue. I was asked to email proof of my address, receipt, and a copy of the card. I sent the information on 12/30/24 and received an email that same day saying they were researching the problem and it could take up to 30 days. My case ID was 75686692. I realized I had not heard from them and called on 3/4/25 and was told that my claim was denied. They would not give me the reason why via phone nor email. I asked to speak to a supervisor and spoke to “Supervisor Ryan” who proceeded to tell me the same thing and told me to go back to where I purchased the card. I explained to him that Target said it was their policy to contact the company that issued the card.
I've tried to contact Target a number of times with always the same result - contact Mastercard. In my last contact in June 2025, I sat on hold through the chat function on the website which timed out after waiting for an agent for almost 30 minutes. I put in a complaint with the FTC. I purchased a gift card from a reputable company and being made to eat the cost of fraud committed within their store.
