I never bother writing reviews, but the Allegiant experience at Harrisburg International Airport (MDT) is so consistently painful that it finally broke me. I fly this route (St. Pete–Clearwater to MDT) every few months, and without fail, everything is perfectly fine, until it’s time to deal with Allegiant’s ticketing and gate staff on the way home. Yesterday was a masterclass in inefficiency. I arrived at 4:05 p.m. for a 6:41 p.m. flight, giving myself plenty of time, I thought, to get through TSA at a small airport at the tail end of a holiday weekend and enjoy dinner before boarding. Silly me. There was one line of about 20 people for bag check, so I joined. Instead of, I don’t know, helping the people actually standing there, the agents announced they would only be assisting Fort Lauderdale passengers (there were none) and that St. Pete passengers should just - wait. For 25 minutes. Because apparently adhering to the sacred “check in exactly two hours before your flight” doctrine matters more than basic common sense to the Allegiant employees at MDT. At 4:41, they finally started checking us in. Progress! Except not really. After standing there for 30 minutes, I finally reached the front, only to be told I needed to go to a different line entirely because I lacked priority status. Never mind that the other line hadn’t even existed when I got there, meaning I’d already been waiting longer than anyone in it. I explained this to the agent and asked if I could just drop my bag. Instead of taking the two seconds it would’ve required to tag it, they sent me to the end of the line anyway. Because why solve a problem quickly when you can be rude and make it worse? Apparently, logic also didn't check in yesterday. So back I went, to the end of the slowest-moving line known to man, while the ticketing agent continued, inexplicably, to make announcements calling for Fort Lauderdale passengers to come forward and jump ahead of everyone else. This, despite the fact that their flight had already been delayed to depart after the St. Pete flight (And despite the rest of us having actually shown up on time). At that point, it felt less like an airport and more like a social experiment in how long people will tolerate pure nonsense. By the time I checked my bag and got through TSA, it was already 5:30. I sat down, ordered a drink and food, and immediately got a notification that boarding had started at 5:56. Naturally, I canceled my order and rushed to the gate - where we then stood around for another 30 minutes before departing late anyway. So let’s recap: unnecessary delays, arbitrary rules, zero communication, and a complete disregard for passengers’ time. It’s honestly impressive how consistently unpleasant this experience is. Next time, I’ll happily pay more, take a longer, non-direct route on another airline, and consider it money well spent just to avoid dealing with this level of idiocy.
