I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding racial profiling and discriminatory treatment I experienced, along with my relative and my 5 year old daughter, at the IKEA Burbank location on the evening of June 19, 2026 — Juneteenth, at approximately 6-8:28 PM. I have my receipt and am requesting that this complaint be escalated to corporate Customer Relations and documented. I also spoke by phone with a representative named Jessica at 9:55 PM that evening.
What happened:
We were greeted at entry with visible discomfort from one employee who appeared to have a staring problem that absolutely made us uncomfortable - meanwhile happily greeted others. Unfortunately, we had to deal with this weird on and off staring for longer than we could tolerate - While waiting near the Marketplace for Småland (which was closed due to an accident), a blonde employee with very large glasses spoke warmly and directly to my daughter, but treated my relative and me with visible suspicion as we moved in and out of the area hoping that the play area would open soon - my little girl was excited.
When we went to pay, an employee watched us closely and with apparent suspicion while we used self-checkout — for a small, inexpensive order that did not warrant this level of attention. That employee then approached us partway to "check us out," something I did not observe happening to any other customers nearby, who were simply scanning their own receipts without interference. When we went to collect our pre-paid ice cream, again, no other customers around us were receiving this kind of scrutiny or "extra service."
Whether this is happenstance or intentional, the very minimum is to treat everyone equally. That is the responsibility.
We are not thieves. I am a small business owner — I own and operate two coffee shops here in Los Angeles, and I take real pride in serving and investing in my community. To be treated as a suspect in a retail store, with my child, on Juneteenth specifically, was deeply hurtful and unacceptable.
I recognize that individual employees may act out of their own ignorance or bias, but IKEA as a company is responsible for how its staff treats customers, and for ensuring this kind of bias does not define the experience of Black families shopping in your stores. This was not a one-off awkward interaction — it was a pattern across multiple employees and multiple points of contact during a single visit, and it followed a recognizable shape of racial profiling.
I am requesting the following:
1. A written acknowledgment of this complaint from IKEA Customer Relations with a case number.
2. A description of what corrective action will be taken at the Burbank store, including staff training on bias and customer treatment.
3. A direct response from store leadership addressing this specific incident.
I have my receipt from the visit and am prepared to provide further details, including timing and descriptions of the employees involved, upon request. Given the nature of this complaint, I expect it to be treated with the seriousness it deserves and not routed as a routine service issue.
