I am writing regarding a recent purchase where I was charged a different price than what was displayed at checkout.
On 11/19 I purchased two baby toys using the Target Circle promotion (buy one, get one 50% off). During checkout, both items displayed at promotional prices, including one item for $79.40 that required delivery. I applied a $20.00 gift card to my order.
When the item arrived, I was charged $99.00—the full price—instead of the $79.40 shown at checkout. My order was split into two transactions without warning: one received the promotion, the other did not. This split order policy and its impact on promotions was never disclosed during checkout.
When I contacted customer service to resolve this price discrepancy, I spoke with a representative who informed me that Target's policy does not apply promotions to split purchases. This policy was never disclosed during the checkout process, where I was shown completely different prices than what I was ultimately charged. I find it unacceptable that Target would display promotional pricing at checkout and then charge customers a different amount without any warning or explanation. If half of my order qualified for the promotion, why didn't the other half?
When I attempted to ask clarifying questions about this policy and inquire about returning the items, the representative Angel accused me of shouting at her, which I was not doing. She then placed me on hold, and upon returning several minutes later, she immediately told me I needed to let her speak before I could say a word. This was condescending and unprofessional.
The representative eventually apologized for "misspeaking" and told me that because I'm a regular customer, I could call back in a few days to receive the promotional price. This entire interaction was confusing, contradictory, and a complete waste of my time.
Target's practices appear deliberately designed to make policies as difficult to understand as possible. Displaying one price at checkout and charging another is misleading at best and deceptive at worst. Combined with dismissive and unprofessional customer service, this experience has completely eroded my trust in your company.
I am requesting:
An immediate refund of the price difference ($19.60) between what was displayed at checkout and what I was charged
A clear explanation of why promotional pricing was shown at checkout but not honored
An apology for the poor customer service I received
I have been a loyal Target customer, but this experience has made it clear that Target does not value its customers or stand behind the prices it displays. Unless this matter is resolved satisfactorily, I will be taking my business elsewhere and sharing my experience with others.
