J. Paul Getty in 1976, his son Gordon Getty and his family gained a 40 percent interest in the corporation. However, s sold only a few of the refineries. Getty continued to operate as a downstream concern during the sale of the reserves. As a condition of the buyout, Getty gas stations in the Northeast were auctioned off to the highest bidder. After successfully bidding for and purchasing the Getty Oil Company in 1984, Texaco sued for contract interference by the Pennzoil Company, whose own planned Texaco's winning bid had derailed the acquisition of Getty. Texaco kept ownership of Getty, but Pennzoil was granted $1 billion in punitive penalties following a five-year legal battle.
