A chain of restaurants and gift shops with a Southern country theme, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. Company founder Dan Evins opened the company's first store in Lebanon, Tennessee, in 1969. The corporate office is located at a separate facility in the same city. Initial stores were located near exits of Interstate Highways in the Southeast and Midwest, but the chain expanded across the country during the 1990s and 2000s. By September 16, 2020, the chain will operate 663 stores in 45 states. Dan Evins first developed the restaurant and gift store concept to increase gasoline sales in 1969. During the early 1900s, small-town stores across the American South offered barrels filled with soda crackers, where people would gather to chat and catch up, similar in purpose to today's office water coolers.
